What Makes Tremont, Tremont?

A Mix of Old & New Architecture
There is a big mix of old and new throughout Tremont. You’ll see a very modern, boxy-styled townhome next to a historic and somewhat ornate brick building next to it. While I think they did a fairly good job of blending the old and new.
Collegiate History
As you drive around Tremont, you’ll notice a lot of street signs inspired by education, such as “Professor”, “College”, “University”, and “Literary”. These are remnants of the neighborhood’s brief history as the home of Cleveland University from 1851-1853.
Tremont’s Historic Churches
Tremont has 26 churches within one square mile, giving it, according to Experience Tremont, the largest concentration of historic churches in the country. Some still operate as churches, while others have been renovated for new uses. One of the most popular churches, Saint Theodosius caught fire in 2024, is finally under repairs in 2026.
The Highest Concentration of Leg Lamps Per Capita
I’m being silly here, but if you visit Tremont, you’ll quickly notice that they really love a Leg Lamp from the classic movie A Christmas Story. I attribute it to the neighborhood being home to the house used for exterior shots in the film. It’s just another quirky personality trait that makes Tremont fun to explore.

Explore Tremont’s Distinct Areas
You’ll find that many Cleveland neighborhoods are made up of smaller areas and sub-neighborhoods, each with its own personality. Here are a couple of distinct areas to keep in mind as you explore Tremont.
Professor Avenue & the Heart of Tremont
Vibe: Energetic, neighborhood-y, weekend-busy
Where: Along Professor Avenue in the heart of Tremont
Who it’s for: Boutique shoppers, foodies, drinks, date nights, and casual get-togethers
While you’ll find boutiques, cafés, restaurants, and bars throughout Tremont, a large concentration of them can be found along Professor Avenue.
Duck Island
Vibe: Small, quiet, mostly residential
Where: Between Lorain Avenue, the RTA Red Line, Scranton Road, and Train Avenue
Who it’s for: A classy night out for cocktails or a beer
Duck Island is a small neighborhood located between Tremont and Ohio City and often described as part of Tremont and falls within Tremont’s borders based on maps. And despite the name, it is not an island and has nothing to do with ducks! The name is commonly said to have originated during Prohibition, when the area became associated with bootleggers who could “duck” the law.
Things to Do in Tremont
Here are some of the fun things you can do in the Tremont neighborhood.

Visit the House from A Christmas Story
The house from A Christmas Story is a real home in Cleveland’s Tremont neighborhood used for exterior shots in the popular Christmas movie. It was later purchased and renovated to recreate the interior seen in the movie. Now you can tour the home, visit a memorabilia museum across the street, check out their massive Christmas gift shop and even stay overnight in one of the suites in the A Christmas Story House or the neighboring Bumpus House.
If you are interested in an overnight stay, I’d book as early as you can, as the closer it gets to Christmas, the harder it is to find availability. We toured this past season and it was really cool to finally see the inside. They did a great job of trying to match the movie as close as possible.

Take a Photo of the Cleveland Script Sign
1502 Abbey Ave | View My Post on Finding Them All
One of Cleveland’s six Script Signs can be found on the edge of Tremont, at an overlook with expansive city views. This is one of the more popular spots due to its relatively easy access to parking and epic views. It’s one of my favorite viewpoints, especially during sunset as the sky can get dramatic.

Stroll the Towpath Trail
The Towpath Trail runs along the eastern edge of Tremont, giving you an easy way to add some time outdoors to your neighborhood visit. Walk or bike along the trail for views of the Cuyahoga River, historic industrial sites, and the city. You can also use the trail to connect Tremont with other parts of Cleveland.
If you’re not up for a big walk and just want some big views instead, just visit the Sokolowski’s Overlook to get a view of downtown and the Cuyahoga River. If you’re lucky like I recently was, you can even enjoy watching one of the massive ships navigate the rivers twists and turns.

Dine at a New Orleans-Inspired Restaurant
If you know me, you know I love New Orleans, so naturally I have to include one of Tremont’s most NOLA-inspired experiences. Head to Bourbon Street Barrel Room for Cajun and Creole dishes, cocktails, jazz, and a restaurant designed to give you the feel of New Orleans right here in Cleveland. The balconies and French Quarter-inspired details make it one of the more unique dining experiences in the neighborhood.

Grab a Drink with Epic Cleveland Views
Let’s be honest, I’m always going to recommend a rooftop with a good view. Mosaic Brewing has a rooftop patio overlooking the Cleveland skyline, making it a fun place to grab a beer, cocktail, or glass of wine and hang out for a while. Come for the views, stay for another drink. That’s a pretty solid Tremont evening if you ask me.

Hang Out with Cats at affoGATO Cat Cafe
If you’re a cat person, you’ll obviously want to add a stop at affoGATO Cat Cafe to your Tremont itinerary. Grab a drink and a pastry, then head into the cat lounge to spend some time with the adoptable kitties.
Where to Eat
If there’s one thing Tremont is known for, it’s the food scene. It’s really hard to not just list every spot in the neighborhood, but I did my best to curate a list of my absolute favorites.

Breakfast, Brunch, & Lunch
- Martha on the Fly – Egg sandwiches are the main draw at this tiny but popular breakfast spot. You’ll also find donuts, salads, cornmeal fries, and more brunch favorites.
- Leavened – From bread and pastries to pizza, soup, coffee, and hot chocolate, this stylish bakery cafe has something for every craving. I love their Chocolate Chip cookies, so good!
- Lucky’s Cafe – Delicious brunch options made by hand using locally sourced ingredients, including produce from their garden. Featured on both the Food Network’s Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives and Michael Symon’s The Best Things I Ever Ate.
- Grumpy’s Cafe – One of my favorite breakfast and brunch spots around. I highly recommend the Grumpy’s Special with Cajun home fries and andouille sausage, along with other breakfast classics if you’re in the mood for New Orleans vibes.
- Tost Sandwich Cafe – Panini-style sandwiches, deli salads, soups and more. Find a small marketplace in the back of the shop with shelves of food goods.

Lunch, Dinner & Late Night
- STEAK – “Not your parents’ steakhouse” is their motto, and they’re right. Enjoy a prix-fixe choose-your-own-adventure menu, energetic atmosphere, and unexpected extras, like a gold-coated steak!
- Bourbon Street Barrel Room – A taste of New Orleans in Cleveland. Enjoy a Cajun-focused menu in a restaurant that makes you feel like you’re in the French Quarter, jazz music, balconies and all.
- Rowley Inn – Classic comfort food just around the corner from A Christmas Story House & Museum. Perfect for a relaxed lunch or dinner. Another Cleveland spot featured on Food Network’s Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives.
- Lil Ronnie’s – Enjoy NY-style pizza by the slice or a pie to go.

- Edison’s Pizza Kitchen – Recently opened a new location after returning to Tremont after a brief time away; this classic Tremont spot is a go-to for delicious pizza.
- Literary Tavern – Historic tavern with chef-driven entrees, sharable plates, and a wide selection of beers, wines, and liquor.

- Barrio Tacos – You go to Barrio when you want to choose-your-own-adventure with your tacos and bowls.
- The South Side – An assortment of sandwiches, entrees, and sides with a fun patio space.
- Mosaic Brewing – Casual eats, assortment of beers and cocktails, and a killer small rooftop with views of the Downtown skyline.

Dessert
- Cookie Boy – Small-batch microbakery in Cleveland making some of the best cookies in town using quality ingredients. They finally have a brick-and-mortar location, but hours are limited and the cookies can sell out quickly. Found their account early on and loved the design aesthetic, been a fan ever since because the cookies are delicious.
- Battr Sweets – Indulge with a scoop of gelato or a gelato shake, or go big with one of their more elaborate creations, which combine cookies and other treats, using bubble waffles and more.

Where to Drink in Tremont
- Flower on Freeman – A beautiful cocktail lounge with patio space and stylish interior.
- Velvet Tango Room – An elevated space with live music and thoughtfully crafted cocktails
- Porco Lounge & Tiki Room – A Tiki Room atmosphere serving up exotic cocktails and small bites.
- Cloak & Dagger – This bar gives dark academia with a vegan menu, thoughtful cocktails, and one of the most beautiful menu art out there.

This popular annual street festival takes over several blocks of Tremont each summer, bringing together local restaurants, food vendors, artists, live music, shopping, and more. Always a fun day, but good luck getting parking!

Plan Your Visit
📍 Location: Just south of Downtown Cleveland.
🚗 Parking: Most parking is street parking, with some limited parking lots throughout the neighborhood.
🚶 Walkability: Tremont is a walkable neighborhood, particularly around Professor Avenue and Lincoln Park, but it’s spread out enough that you may want your car for stops farther apart.
🚆 Public Transit: Tremont is accessible by public transportation, although having a car can make it easier to get between some of the neighborhood’s more spread-out attractions.
More things to know
📅 Best Time to Visit: Tremont is worth visiting year-round, but I am especially fond of fall.
⏰ How Much Time You’ll Need: You can easily visit for dinner and drinks, or spend an entire day eating, shopping, exploring, and wandering around the neighborhood.
Safety: Tremont is a neighborhood in the city and like all cities it can have the occasional rash of car break-ins, and other petty crime. It’s rare for violent crime to happen, but it has briefly in the past. All that to say, I’ve never felt unsafe and we used to live there for a few years. My best advice is to do what I’d suggest in any city, use your street smarts. Stay in well-lit, populated areas at night. Always be aware of your surroundings, and please do not leave anything valuable or visible in your car!
Where to Stay in Tremont: Tremont doesn’t have many traditional hotels, but there are some cute vacation rentals and rooms throughout the neighborhood. Here are a few that caught my eye:
- Trendy in Tremont: You can rent the upstairs or downstairs of this decorated home.
- Art of Tremont Theatre Room: This huge space has an art gallery, colorful interiors, an awesome-looking movie room, and an indoor-outdoor space. Check for availability.
- Luxe Modern Colonial: Find a sauna and cold plunge on the amenities list at this modern home.
Hey! Just a friendly reminder: These rentals are all in a residential neighborhood. Be cool, be respectful of the neighbors, and treat the neighborhood like someone’s home, because it is.
