Tremont Neighborhood Guide

Welcome to my Neighborhood Guide for one of the more popular Cleveland, Ohio neighborhoods, Tremont. Home to over twenty churches, well-known chef-operated restaurants, unique boutiques, street festivals, and its proximity to Downtown and other popular neighborhoods, Tremont has a little something for everyone.

With its charm, colorful homes, wrought-iron fencing, and alleyways, Tremont gives off strong New Orleans vibes. There’s even a New Orleans-themed restaurant! You’ll see bits of its university history with its academically-oriented street names, you’ll lose count of how many A Christmas Story Leg Lamps you find in windows, and you won’t lack for delicious food, shopping, or art.

Tremont Highlights

  1. Check out the actual home used in A Christmas Story, and visit the recreated interior to feel like Ralphy. (you’ll notice a lot of Leg Lamps in windows around the neighborhood)
  2. Enjoy the summer favorite Taste of Tremont, an annual street festival with food, art, and fun.
  3. Tremont gives major New Orleans vibes around the neighborhood, but also at Bourbon Street Barrel Room.
  4. Visit the Affogato Cat Café and make some new furry friends.
  5. Tremont is known for having many churches, in fact, there are over 20 churches in the neighborhood.

Churches Galore

Tremont is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, but so are many of the churches within its borders. In fact, there are 26 churches within one square mile which is the largest concentration of historic churches in the country. A photographer’s favorite church is St. Theodosius Russian Orthodox with its iconic green patina roof.

Eat Cajun Home Fries & Andouille Sausage at Grumpy’s Cafe

Grumpy’s is one of the yummiest breakfast & brunch spots in Tremont. I highly recommend getting the Grumpy’s Special with Cajun home fries and andouille sausage along with other breakfast classics if you’re going for the New Orleans vibes.

Old School

As you drive around Tremont, you’ll notice a lot of street signs inspired by education such as “Professor”, “College”, “University”, and “Literary”. These are remnants of Tremont’s past as home to Cleveland University back in 1851-1853.

New Orleans Vibes

Bourbon Street Barrel Room

It’s no secret that New Orleans is one of my favorite cities which is why I noticed all of the NOLA-esque details around the Tremont neighborhood. When I walk around the neighborhood, I see courtyards and alleyways with wrought-iron fencing and colorful homes that remind me of the homes you’d see around New Orleans that make me feel like I’m walking around the French Quarter. There’s even a New Orleans-themed restaurant called The Bourbon Street Barrel Room where you can get Cajun food and beignets.

A Christmas Story House & Museum

As you drive around Tremont, you may notice an abundance of familiar Leg Lamps in the windows of residences and businesses alike. That’s because you can find the actual home from the movie that plays non-stop every holiday season, A Christmas Story, in the heart of Tremont.

This home is the actual home facade used in the popular Christmas movie. The owner renovated the interior to match the movie as much as possible and turned it into a museum and home you can rent out to reenact your favorite A Christmas Story moments. Its most busy season is during the holidays but the museum is open year-round.

Did you know there is a book-themed brewery in Cle Did you know there is a book-themed brewery in Cleveland’s Ohio City neighborhood? Bookhouse Brewing, a local brewery making ciders and beers in a historic building from the 1800’s previously owned by the Baehr family-read more on Bookhouse’s website about previous occupants and the interesting history. Lots of original details can be seen throughout the brewery, too. Definitely worth a visit when in town, it’s in the heart of one of the most popular Cleveland neighborhoods and minutes from Downtown Cleveland. In fact, due to a new park being built along the Cuyahoga River nearby, the brewery has an amazing view of downtown due to some buildings being taken down. Killer views, amazing interior aesthetic, and great beers (and other drinks for us non-beer drinkers!)
