During an epic road trip through the Pacific Northwest that started in Seattle, Washington and ended in Portland, Oregon, we stopped in Washington states Olympic National Park for almost two full days. We were able to fit a lot of sightseeing without feeling like we were rushing through anything in those two days. We saw lakes, waterfalls, mountains, rivers, a rainforest and a beautiful, rocky coastline with the Pacific Ocean.
The first location we visited in Olympic National Park was Lake Crescent. Our day began in Port Angeles, a small sleepy town where our hotel was located. We got on the Olympic Highway and drove about 30 minutes towards Lake Crescent. The drive was incredibly beautiful and once you got closer to the lake you began to see little sneak peeks of it between the trees. There were a few areas designated for drivers to pull over and enjoy the scenery and that’s how we experienced Lake Crescent.
Lake Crescent is large, crescent-shaped lake formed in the last ice age when glaciers carved out deep valleys. It’s incredible blue and turquoise color is due to lack of nitrogen in the water and makes for a spectacular view. You can see Pyramid Mountain in the background which added to the sweeping views.
One thing I enjoyed the most while in the Pacific Northwest is all of the lush, green vegetation and trees. There is so much of it everywhere!
I wasn’t kidding, the water of Lake Crescent is seriously so blue.
The drive along the 101 gives you incredible views of the lake and the surrounding tree-covered mountains. It’s breathtaking. There were several areas you could pull your car over, get out, stretch your legs and enjoy the views along the way.
This view was near the Storm King Ranger’s station and our last peek at the lake before we continued to our next journey.
