Where is Galgorm Spa Resort?

Between Giant’s Causeway & Belfast: Two Popular Northern Ireland Stops
You’ll find Galgorm Resort Spa nestled in Galgorm Wood along the River Maine, just 1 km west of Ballymena in County Antrim. Itโs located about 45 minutes south of the Giantโs Causeway and 30 minutes north of Belfast, two of Northern Irelandโs most popular attractions. Whether you’re planning a full Northern Ireland itinerary or a quick getaway, Galgorm makes for a convenient and luxurious stop.
Here is a Google My Map I put together of all the places I share in this post.

What it’s like visiting the Galgorm Spa Resort
Arriving at Galgorm feels refreshingly low-key. After winding your way through quiet country roads, youโll check in at a charming little reception building before heading off to your overnight accommodation. The staff gives you all the essential details from where to park, how to access your room, where to eat, and how to make the most of your time in the Thermal Village.
@localloveandwanderlust Want to know what it was like to stay in a Forest Den at the luxury resort & spa Galgorm in Northern Ireland? A delight! I was actually influenced by some videos I came across when researching our trip and Iโm so glad we added this spa & resort to our Ireland itinerary. โ๏ธ awesome & friendly staff โ๏ธ adorable Forest Den with a yard (a sauna, fire heated tub, outdoor shower, hammock, porch chairs, and eating area with sounds of the River Maine nearby) โ๏ธaccess to their amazing thermal spa the entire stay โ๏ธcozy space with towel heater, Dyson blow dryer, comfy bed, kitchen items, and most items in mini bar included โ๏ธ restauraunts and cafes on site so you donโt have to leave My only regret is we only had a few hours in the evening to enjoy the space and had to leave early the next day. Iโd recommend giving yourself a full day if you can. Thereโs so much of the thermal spa we didnโt get to see, plus I would have loved to book a service like a massage. Sometimes you may have to wait for a turn if a sauna or other space is occupied, but in our experience things opened up regularly and we were able to enjoy several of the Thermal Spa amenities in our short visit. Check out their website for all the details on all the options. Thinking about a stay at Galgorm? Got questions about our stay? Let me know! (Also, if anyone knows a comparable place in the states? Staying in a Forest Den at Galgorm
When I first discovered Galgorm Spa Resort, I went into full research mode. I scoured the internet for any information I could find on the different accommodation options, the Thermal Village, and what it all looked like in real life. While Galgormโs website is informative, I found it didn’t give me the full picture of where we’d be staying. I am hoping this post helps anyone planning their visit – especially if you are looking to stay in a Forest Den!

Our Forest Den Stay
We spent a good amount of time debating which lodging to choose and we landed on the one of the adorable new Forest Dens. After checking in we drove over to our parking lot area and walked across the river and into the woods where the Forest Den village is. Ours was the first one right at the edge of the Galgorm Wood. I was so excited to see the space, it already looked awesome from the outside. As we opened the fence door to our private backyard space, I couldn’t believe how big the outdoor space was! The Forest Den felt like a little hobbit house and backyard amenities were plentiful.
I remember listening to the River Maine flow through the backyard while the wind rustled through the trees swaying gently above. The seclusion felt so peaceful – I only wished we had more time to really relax and enjoy everything even more. The Forest Dens are recent additions to the property and are one of the furthest lodging from the Thermal Village. You should expect about an 8-10 minute walk from your den.
Tip: Did the temperature drop? Feet hurt in the flip flops? Ask if you could get a lift back to your Forest Den! We got one at the end of the night and it was a life saver as it got chilly and we were wet from the spa.

Forest Den Amenities We Loved
The Forest Dens are newer additions to Galgormโs collection of overnight accommodations, and while the space was compact, it had a lot to offer. Some highlights:
- Private Backyard Retreat: We had our own charming, fenced-in yard with a porch with seating, a covered outdoor dining area, hammock, and even our own outdoor shower, personal sauna, and heated tub! (Sadly, we didn’t get to use much of the outdoor amenities due to the limited time we had. We stayed at the Thermal Village until they closed and had to leave first thing in the morning.)
- Complimentary Mini-Bar & Snacks: Some items required payment, but most of the treats in the fridge and snack basket were free.
- Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer: My first time using oneโnow I fully understand the hype.
- Towel Heater: I think this is common in hotels in Ireland & Northern Ireland, but what a treat! Toasty warm towels.

The Vibe: Cozy, Quiet, and Private
What was extra special was how private and cozy the space felt. Our backyard was fenced in, while the back stayed open with access to the woods. You could hear the River Maine flowing nearby, an added layer of serenity.ย We didn’t hear any of our neighbors.
Would We Stay in a Forest Den Again?
While my husband would like to stay closer to the Thermal Village if we were to visit again, I am torn. I loved this charming forest getaway so much – but was bummed we didn’t have time to utilize all it had to offer. My verdict would be that if we were to return and had limited time – I’d like to stay closer to the Thermal Village. If we had at least 2 nights, I’d love to give the Forest Den another stay and utilize the outdoor amenities.
Here are a few things that I think could be improved, but are in no way a deal breaker (for us)
- Location: It is quite far from the Thermal Village – as mentioned above, if we had more time to utilize the space to the fullest, I could get over that.
- Interior Space: The living space didn’t leave a lot of room to open and store your luggage. We had to keep ours closed and on the floor pushed against the wall. I wish there was an easier way to have luggage and use it.
- The bathroom was small and that felt OK, however, there wasn’t much counter space. I get that the sink was small to fit the space, but extra surface to put your toiletries would be nice. There was also no plug for the blow dryer in the bathroom, however, I think this is common in hotels in this area.
Again, none of these were deal-breakers for us, but if you prefer a larger footprint or easier access to the spa, you might want to explore other options on the property.

Dining at the Galgorm
There are several restaurants on-site which is ideal, because once you’re relaxed and settled in, you probably wonโt want to leave. Be sure to check the dining hours on Galgormโs website, as some restaurants have limited hours or may be closed on certain days.
On-Site Restaurant Options
- Gillies Restaurant A guest and local favorite, Gillies serves classic brasserie dishes, a grill selection, and Asian-inspired creations, all using fresh local Antrim produce. This is also where the breakfast buffet is served, which was included in our stay.
- Castle Kitchen & Bar Located at the Galgorm Castle Golf Club, this relaxed dining spot offers an eclectic mix of lunch and dinner options. Donโt miss The Barn, a cozy adjacent venue open on weekends thatโs dog-friendly and perfect for cocktails and entertainment.
- Fratelli Ristorante This rustic-yet-modern Italian restaurant and bar serves pizzas and hearty pastas in a stylish space full of charm.
- McKendryโs Lounge & Whiskey Bar This cozy bar feels like a refined Irish pub, with warm wood finishes and an extensive selection of whiskey and cocktails.
- Woodpecker Takeaway Ideal for low-key dining, this is a great option if you prefer to eat in your room. Thereโs a menu in your accommodations, and prices are reasonable.
- Conservatory & Afternoon Tea Enjoy light bites, cocktails, and tea in a bright glass conservatory with river views. Itโs also home to Galgormโs gin library.
- Mulberry Garden A hidden alfresco gem between Fratelli and Gillies. A great spot to grab a drink from McKendryโs and unwind outdoors.

Why We Chose Takeout
We were eager to start our Thermal Village experience, so we opted for takeout, and it was a great call. Our order arrived quickly and tasted great. We split a large cheesy garlic bread (served pizza-style!) and each had a Caesar salad. We also ordered pasta dishes, which arenโt currently on the menu, but both were flavorful and filling.

Breakfast Is Included
We recommend taking advantage of the free breakfast included with your stay at the Galgorm Spa Resort. There is a huge buffet spread set up inside Gillies and there is a little something for everyone. From fruit to grains, breads, and other bites. There’s even a hot food station with eggs, meat, breads, waffles, and more.

The Thermal Village – What to Expect & why we’re obsessed
The Galgorm experience was unlike anything weโve ever done. It left such an impression that weโve been chasing something similar ever since we returned home back in the States. Read on to see why weโre hooked and why this thermal spa is worth adding to your itinerary.
But first, what is a thermal spa? A series of hot and cold experiences like saunas, hot tubs, and cold plunge pools with opportunities for deep, restful breaks in between. Often called a circuit, the intention is that you would work your way through the hot and cold experiences, take a break, and repeat a few times within your spa visit.ย
Stepping Into Relaxation
We made our way over to the entrance of the Thermal Village in our cozy robes and flip flops that were in our Forest Den. Once we entered the village, we were greeted with the simple beauty of the landscaping and amenities. Nothing felt over the top, just down to earth and beautiful. The relaxing sounds of the River Maine flowed by as we made our way to the Thermal Village Reception to get our towels. We had to ask for directions as we were unsure how to find it, but we also didn’t have a map on us to reference.
Once we received our towel (btw, you get a token when you check in for your towel and will be charged if you don’t return it end of day) we started to explore the property to see what was available. It was a warm evening in mid-May, definitely not peak season, so while a lot of areas had people occupying them, we were able to have a turn in several spaces without much wait. I do understand, however, this can all be dependent on the season you visit, time of day, etc.
We hopped around from the Salt Cave, Sanarium, Snow Cabin, various hot tubs including our favorite and hottest, the Beltane Experience. Watched a Heron hunt for its dinner in the River Maine from one of the Vitality Pools. We relaxed in the jetted pools and Alpine pool and ended our evening on one of the heated waterbed loungers (I am not sure the official name of these) next to the indoor pool. It was dreamy!
Highlights of the Thermal Village
The Thermal Village at the Galgorm Spa Resort is separated into smaller areas where you’ll find a variety of amenities. I break it down below with the three main areas noted on their maps, plus a call out for the indoor experiences, too. While I am sharing what you can expect in each area, be sure to check out their website to get the full details and up-to-date info.

Indoor Experiences
Youโll begin your experience at the Thermal Village Reception, where you can return towels or request fresh robes which is especially useful if, like us, youโre staying in one of the Forest Dens, which are a bit of a walk from the spa. Hereโs what youโll find indoors:
- Indoor Pool: A 20-meter (65-foot) heated pool open from 7 am to 10 pm. Around the pool are heated waterbed loungers, comfortable seating, a refillable water station, and locker rooms.
- Sanarium: This isnโt as hot as a typical sauna. Kept around 50โ60ยฐC and lightly scented, it offers a gentler heat experience.
- Snow Cabin: A chilled room at -10ยฐC, filled with real snow and icy air. Perfect for post-sauna contrast therapy, it gives a tingly, invigorating sensation that can help circulation and respiratory health.
Additional indoor facilities include a Fitness Suite, Treatment Rooms, Hydrotherapy Pool, Skin Clinic, and the Treatment Relaxation Orangery.

The Alpine Garden
If youโre staying in the Forest Dens or Shepherdโs Huts, this will likely be your entry point. Though quieter than other areas, the Alpine Garden is a peaceful riverside space with some lovely features.
- Alpine Pool: A glass-walled jetted pool with loungers built into the walls. A perfect spot to unwind while taking in the view.
- Vitality Pools: Two infinity-edge pools along the River Maine, complete with gentle jets. We spent 30 minutes in one, leaning on the edge and watching a bird hunt for fish.
Youโll also find private saunas, a steam room, a fire pit, cabanas, and private riverside hot tubs available for rental.

The Riverside Garden
Continue along the river to discover the Riverside Gardenโan area packed with outdoor hot and cold experiences.
- Celtic Sauna: Home to daily Aufguss ritualsโintense aromatherapy sessions from Finland and Germany designed to deeply cleanse body and mind. Held at 1 pm, 4 pm, and 5 pm.
- Beltane Experience: Two 12-person hot tubs with a sunken fire pit between them. These were the warmest tubs we found and perfect before jumping into theโฆ
- Plunge Pool: Icy cold and small, perfect for a post-sauna cool-down. We tried it, very briefly, and were impressed by those who managed to stay submerged. It was SO cold.
- Salt Cave: This lightly heated room infuses the air with salt, offering the wellness benefits of halotherapy. Complimentary, but bookable in 40-minute time slots throughout the day.
- Outdoor Jacuzzi Pool: A larger, lightly jetted pool. It wasnโt quite warm or bubbly enough for our taste, so we didnโt stay long.
Other features include a standard hot tub, steam room, more private riverside hot tubs, The River House Relax Space, loungers, a 1000-year-old olive tree, and Elements Cafรฉ for riverside dining.

The Walled Garden
This serene section sits behind the main indoor area and feels tucked away. If you’re arriving with a day pass or staying in the main lodge, it may be your main entry point. The Palm House is the standout here, an elegant, glass-walled space for relaxing with food or drinks. This is one area we just didn’t have time to explore, sadly, but looks so lovely! Youโll also find:
- Hot tubs with drink service
- Steam rooms and saunas
- Access to the fitness suite
- Rentable private bathing experiences
Beyond the Thermal Village: Other Spa Amenities
There is a spa that offers massage, facials, and other treatments. There are so many amazing sounding packages and offerings listed on their website. Want to add extras? Check out their website for more details.
What to Pack and Wear for the Spa
- Swimsuit โ Youโll wear it most of the time.
- Flip-flops โWhile they provide you with a cheap pair, you might be more comfortable in your own. There was some walking over pebbled walkways that you could feel through the cheaper flip-flops.
- Refillable water bottle โ Water stations are available throughout the spa, though cups are also provided if you don’t have a bottle.
- Sunscreen, hat, sunglasses โ Especially if you’re sensitive to sun like I am.
The resort provides fluffy robes and towels, but if yours gets wet, you can ask the staff for a fresh one (they were very accommodating!).
See if your dates are available on Hotels.com or on the Galgorm website.

Northern Ireland Essentials
If you’re planning to include Northern Ireland in your Ireland itinerary, here are a few quick things to know before crossing the (invisible) border.
ETA & Passports: Visitors from certain countries, including the U.S., will need to apply for an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before entering the UK, which includes Northern Ireland. The process is simple, costs around ยฃ16, and ours was approved within minutes. Start your application here
If you’re driving from the Republic of Ireland, there are currently no passport checks at the border, but it’s still wise to carry your passport in case you’re asked for ID during your travels or if youโre using other forms of transport (like flights or ferries).
Currency: Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom, so you’ll be using the Pound Sterling (ยฃ) instead of the Euro. That said, credit cards and mobile payments (like Apple Pay) were widely accepted everywhere we went. It’s still a good idea to carry a small amount of cash for tipping or small local shops.
Language: English is the primary language spoken in Northern Ireland.
Driving: Speed limits in Northern Ireland are posted in miles per hour, while the Republic of Ireland uses kilometers. If you’re using GPS or a map app, the units usually update automatically once you cross the border. If you plan to add Northern Ireland to your itinerary, your car rental may want to know. They can also tell you if your car can switch to miles per hour, and how to do it.ย

And on to some personal thoughts…
Is One Night Enough at Galgorm Spa Resort?
Technically? Yes.
We checked in shortly after the official check-in time and still managed to soak in many of the resortโs amenities, including time at the spa and a delicious dinner. That said, Iโd recommend staying at least two nights if you can swing it. With more time, you can slow down and enjoy everything the resort has to offer without feeling rushed.
Still, if one night is all you have, don’t worry, we had just about four hours in the Thermal Village, and it was 100% worth it.
What We Loved Most
- Having our own private yard in the Forest Den, even if we didn’t utilize all of it
- How stylish and cozy our room was – it was the cutest space
- Full access to the entire Thermal Village property
- Friendly, helpful staff – they even left us an anniversary gift and handwritten card, so thoughtful! They were also very helpful throughout the Thermal Spa.
Things to Consider
- Crowds at Peak Times: Even though the property is large, I’ve read complaints about it being crowded during weekends, holidays, and peak hours. We visited in mid-May which seemed like a great time. Full, but not overflowing with visitors.
- Not Completely Silent: In our experience, guests have been quiet and respectful, however, you may hear conversations or encounter groups of friends.
- A Little Tricky to Navigate: We admit we were lost after entering the village. The Thermal Village reception was set further back from where the Forest Den guests would enter. Be sure to brush up on the map before you visit.
- Pricey for Short Visits: While we felt the pricing was reasonable for everything we were getting, I understand that this can feel like a splurge to some. I framed this in the context of getting something similar in the states would cost well over $1000 a night and we paid under $400 (it was around ยฃ250, the conversion rate was rough when we visited)
