Cleveland’s Best Fall Views & Hikes
One of the best ways to enjoy fall in Cleveland is by heading outdoors. With thousands of acres of parks and reservations, Cuyahoga Valley National Park, the Ohio & Erie Canalway, and Lake Erie all within easy reach, there are plenty of places to enjoy colorful leaves and crisp autumn air.
When Is Peak Fall Color in Cleveland?
In a typical year, peak fall color around Cleveland tends to arrive in mid-October, though timing can shift with the weather. I usually start watching the foliage in September and expect the best color to arrive sometime in October, with some trees holding onto their leaves into early November.
These are a few of the fall foliage maps and trackers I reference as the season approaches: Explore Fall, American Forests, Ohio DNR, Holden Arboretum, and the Farmer’s Almanac.
The Best Fall Hikes & Scenic Walks
Here are a few of my favorite destinations around greater Cleveland for enjoying the outdoors in fall. From elevated scenic views to colorful wooded trails, these spots offer a little bit of everything. Most are within about 30 minutes of Downtown Cleveland, with a few exceptions.

Squire’s Castle
📍 Willoughby Hills, OH | North Chagrin Reservation
Best for: whimsy + photo ops
With its storybook-style castle sitting at the edge of the woods, Squire’s Castle is one of Cleveland’s most popular photo spots, especially in the fall. You can picnic on the lawn in front of the castle, but I especially love strolling through the woods behind it. It truly feels like a fairytale.

Brandywine Falls
📍 Sagamore Hills Township, OH | Cuyahoga Valley National Park
Best for: epic waterfall views
One of the area’s most popular fall destinations, Brandywine Falls is an easy-to-access waterfall just a short walk from the parking lot. A split-level deck offers views from above, or you can take the 80 steps down to the lower deck for a closer look at the roughly 65-foot waterfall. There’s also a moderate trail through the surrounding area if you want to explore a little farther.

Coastal Observation Tower
📍 Perry, OH | Lake Erie Bluffs
Best for: 360-degree foliage & lake views
Follow a trail along bluffs rising 40 feet above Lake Erie to reach the 50-foot Coastal Observation Tower. From the top, you’ll get 360-degree views of the lake, shoreline, and surrounding forest canopy. It’s a small workout with a big payoff, especially when the trees are showing off their fall colors.

Festive Fun on the Farm
One of the best parts of fall in Cleveland is the abundance of farms, orchards, and festivals that go all out for the season. Whether you’re after apple cider, corn mazes, pumpkin patches, or simply that crisp autumn feeling, there are plenty of festive farm spots to enjoy. I’ve visited a handful of farms around Cleveland, and these are three of my favorites for getting into the fall spirit.

🌽 Szalay’s Farm & Market
📍 Peninsula, Ohio | Szalay’s Website
Known for: The best corn ever, pumpkins galore, the weekend eatery, corn maze, and proximity to Cuyahoga Valley National Park
Nestled in the Cuyahoga Valley, Szalay’s is the perfect spot to visit after a morning or afternoon exploring Cuyahoga Valley National Park. There’s a fun corn maze, endless pumpkins to choose from, a fresh market, and a weekend eatery that’s worth a visit. The corn here is so good—they roast it and dip it in butter, making it the perfect midday treat.
Pro tip: Bring cash or be prepared to wait in the long ATM lines.
Szalay’s Fall Events:
- Corn Maze: September 19–October 31
- Eatery: Weekends only, September 12–October 31

Patterson’s Fruit Farm
📍Chesterland, Ohio | Patterson’s Website
Known for: Pick-your-own apples, frozen apple cider, and the Family Fun Fest
This huge family farm celebrates fall with its Family Fun Fest, where you’ll find everything from apples and pumpkins to slides, a corn sandbox, wagon rides, farm animals, and more. You can also shop the year-round Farm Market and pick your own apples. I highly recommend trying one of the frozen apple ciders; they’re so good.
Patterson’s Fall Events:
- Honeycrisp & Ginger Gold apple picking: September 5–7
- Family Fun Fest: September 16–November 1
Mapleside Farms
📍 Brunswick, Ohio | Mapleside’s Website
Known for: Pumpkin Village, 100+ acres of fall fun, and the iconic 311-foot slide.
This 100-year-old family farm hosts a huge fall festival called Pumpkin Village. During the fall, they host themed weekends, including Superhero, Wild West, and Princess & Pirates. Mapleside is also a popular wedding venue and is introducing a new concept, Social House, this fall.
Mapleside Fall Events:
- Social House opens this fall
- Themed Fall Festivals: September 12–November 1
More Northeast Ohio Fall Farms on My Radar
Haven’t made it to these yet, but they’re on my radar for future fall adventures.
Get Cozy in Cleveland
When I’m not out hiking trails or visiting pumpkin patches, I love slowing down and leaning into the cozier side of fall in Cleveland. From indie bookstores to the perfect cup of hot cocoa, here are some of my favorite ways to get cozy in Cleveland this season.

Where to Find Cleveland’s Best Hot Chocolate
I’m not a coffee or tea kind of girl, so when it’s chilly outside, I look for a delicious and cozy cup of hot chocolate. That said, I also have strict criteria for what makes a good cup of hot chocolate. I’ve had so many cups that taste practically like watered-down coffee, and that won’t do. I need rich, creamy, and well-balanced chocolate flavor. If you feel the same way about your hot chocolate, these Cleveland spots are worth trying. Let me know who else I should check out in the comments, especially on the east side!
Cozy Reads for a Cleveland Fall Afternoon
Few things feel more like fall than wandering through a cozy bookstore and finding your next great read. Cleveland has some fantastic independent bookstores, but these are two of my favorites when you want to slow down, browse the shelves, and settle into a cozy space for a while.

Loganberry Books
📍 Larchmere | Loganberry’s WebsiteHoused in a former Studebaker showroom, Loganberry Books is a book lover’s dream, with endless rows of books, cozy nooks, and plenty of places to settle in and browse. Don’t miss The Sanctuary, a specialty section filled with older and rare books. They even have a tiny bookshelf! And if you’re lucky, you might meet Alice, the shop cat, while you’re wandering the shelves.
Visible Voice
📍 Ohio City | Visible Voice’s WebsiteVisible Voice recently moved into the historic Lorain Theatre, transforming the 6,000-square-foot space into a gorgeous bookstore, café, and gathering place. The mix of historic theater details and modern design makes it a particularly lovely spot to linger, grab a drink, and browse for your next read.

Vintage Shopping in Cleveland
Fall is the perfect time to wander through Cleveland’s vintage shops in search of cozy sweaters, quirky home decor, retro treasures, and one-of-a-kind finds. If you like your shopping with a little nostalgia, these are some of my favorite spots to browse on a chilly fall day.
Paradise Galleria
📍 Ohio City | Paradise Galleria Website
Paradise Galleria is two floors of vintage nostalgia and practically an experience in itself. Explore the themed rooms upstairs before taking the famous slide to the lower level, where you’ll find a huge basement filled with vintage vendors and their wares. You could easily spend a couple of hours browsing here, making it a great destination for a chilly fall afternoon.
Sweet Lorain
📍 Detroit Shoreway | Sweet Lorain Website
Sweet Lorain is packed with vintage finds, records, and an especially fun holiday section. It’s the kind of shop where you can spend hours wandering around and discovering all kinds of unexpected treasures.
All Things for You
📍 Tremont | All Things for You Website
Now housed in a huge two-story home, All Things for You has room upon room filled with mid-century pieces, vintage clothing, accessories, and plenty of unexpected finds. There are treasures tucked into all kinds of nooks and corners, making the whole place feel like one giant treasure hunt.
Flower Child
📍 Lakewood | Flower Child Website
Another Cleveland vintage classic, Flower Child now has a much larger, more spread-out space that’s easier to explore. It’s especially known for its extensive selection of holiday items, making it a fun stop as you get closer to Christmas. Even with the new layout, there’s still plenty to discover as you wander through the shop.
Want to make a whole day of it? Pair your vintage shopping with a cozy café, bookstore, shopping, or lunch nearby. Here are two ideas for spending a perfect fall day on Cleveland’s east and west sides!
A Cleveland West Side Day
Start with hot chocolate and a light brunch at The Judith before spending the afternoon exploring Sweet Lorain, Paradise Galleria, and Visible Voice Books. If shopping is building up your appetite, grab a quick lunch at Tripi or head to the West Side Market for a bite from one of the many vendors, then enjoy it from the upper balcony while you people-watch.
Continue your day shopping along Lorain Avenue at shops like CS Folk, Table for 2, and Recreational Pots & Plants. End the day with dinner at Soho or Cents, followed by an ice cream treat at Mason’s Creamery for the perfect fall day out.
A Perfect East Side Evening
Start your day with a peaceful stroll through Shaker Lakes Nature Center, where you can enjoy the beautiful fall colors along the trails. Then head to Loganberry Books and spend some time wandering its seemingly endless aisles and cozy nooks. From there, continue exploring the Larchmere neighborhood and browse the local antique, vintage, and specialty shops along Larchmere Boulevard.
When you’re ready for a break, grab lunch or a cozy drink nearby before continuing your afternoon of exploring. As evening rolls around, head to La Pecora Pizzabar for dinner, then finish the night with a cocktail at nearby Poppy. It’s an easygoing way to spend a fall day exploring some of Cleveland’s best neighborhoods, shops, and cozy spots.

Play Indoors: Fun Things to Do in Cleveland This Fall
Rainy day? Chilly temperatures? Or maybe you need a break from hiking and pumpkin patches? Cleveland has plenty of museums, games, shows, and other indoor attractions that make great fall outings.
Interactive Museums & Attractions
These museums all have something unique in common: they’re highly interactive! From making your own beats to hands-on art exploration and mind-bending illusions, these are the perfect places to spend a chilly fall day indoors.
Rock & Roll Hall of Fame
📍 Downtown | Rock Hall Website
The Rock Hall is filled with artifacts from some of the world’s greatest musicians. See handwritten lyrics to iconic songs, costumes your favorite artists wore, and other unique music memorabilia throughout the exhibits. Then spend some time in The Garage on Level 2, where you can play a variety of instruments either freestyle or with tutorial help.
Maybe making beats is more your jam? Try your hand at being a music producer and create your own beat in the Beats Lab on Level 4. When you’re done, create a band logo and print your own stickers just outside The Garage. And don’t forget to stop by the photo booth on the lower Level 0 for the perfect souvenir!
Don’t Skip: The SNL: Ladies & Gentlemen… 50 Years of Music on Level 0 and the Paul McCartney and Wings on Level 6. Both are spectacular exhibits that shouldn’t be missed.
Pro Tip: Do you have a Cleveland address? You can visit for free through the Rock Hall’s CLE VIP program. They also offer other discount options. Take advantage of it this fall and spend a day at the museum!

Cleveland Museum of Art
📍 University Circle | Museums website
Having visited many art museums in my travels, I still consider the Cleveland Museum of Art one of the best in the country, and it’s absolutely worth a visit. Even better, admission is free for everyone, which isn’t something you’ll find at many top art museums. You can easily spend a full day exploring the museum’s many galleries and exhibits.
Be sure to include time to explore the new ArtLens Reimagined exhibit near the entrance. I was invited to a media preview of this now-opened space and was so impressed with the thought and accessibility considerations that went into reimagining it. I also loved how much fun it was to interact with art in this way. This is the perfect place to start if you feel intimidated or aren’t sure how to look at and think about art. The exhibit is permanent and included with free museum admission!
Don’t miss: My favorite areas are the Ancient Egypt, Armor Court, Tiffany, Contemporary, Abstract Expressionism, Impressionism, and Photography galleries. Also, check out what’s on at the museum. There is always so much going on that you can never be bored!
Pro Tip: The museum has late-night hours on Wednesdays and Fridays, staying open until 9 p.m. This is perfect if your weekends are too busy or you work traditional hours during the day.
Want more art? While not as interactive, I love visiting the Transformer Station, an annex of the Cleveland Museum of Art in Ohio City’s Hingetown neighborhood. This space features emerging artists and a variety of media, and there is plenty to do in the surrounding neighborhood, making it easy to turn your visit into a half-day or full-day outing.

Museum of Illusions
📍 Downtown | Illusions websiteThis relatively new museum in downtown Cleveland is so much fun. There is a mix of illusion rooms, interactive installations, and visual tricks that will have you questioning what you’re seeing. It’s fun for both kids and adults, and the whole place is basically one big photo op.
Don’t Miss: The kaleidoscope view, the spinning tunnel, and the room that makes you look really tall or really short depending on which side you stand. And there are plenty more surprises I won’t spoil!
Pro Tip: The staff are stationed throughout the museum and are more than happy to help you take photos of your favorite illusions, so don’t be afraid to ask!
Games & Indoor Fun

Superelectric Pinball
📍 Gordon Square | Pinball websiteFor just $8, you get all-you-can-play pinball and parlor games. There’s also a bar with a few bites and drinks, and you’re welcome to bring your own food into the space—a great way to spend a chilly fall evening.
Perplexity Games
📍 Ohio City | Perplexity’s websiteGet some friends together and find your way out of one of their themed escape rooms. Choose from a variety of experiences, including Cleveland-inspired themes and seasonal rooms.
