Disclaimer: Because it is a minor holiday in Cleveland, many businesses do not make their plans available until close to the holiday date. However, I did my best to gather information on events and dates from multiple sources. Some businesses still have not shared their plans at this time; I will update this listing as soon as they do so that you can plan ahead accordingly. Be sure to double-check anywhere you decide to go for hours of operation and availability; some things were noted based on what others did last year.

Mardi Gras & Fat Tuesday Events in Cleveland

But First, What is Mardi Gras?
You’ve probably heard of Mardi Gras before, but do you know what it is?
Today, let’s take a moment to talk about what Mardi Gras is and why it’s celebrated. Mardi Gras is a French term meaning “Fat Tuesday,” and is the final day of a season of revelry and indulgence referred to around the world as Carnival. Beginning on January 6, otherwise known as the Epiphany in Christian religions, this celebration can last from one to three months. The season officially ends the day before Ash Wednesday, which is known as Fat Tuesday. The end date fluctuates based on when Easter lands that year.
The season of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, a day of solemnity when many people give up something indulgent they enjoy for the 40 days until Easter. This helps to explain why Carnival celebrations are so full of indulgence: people would use up ingredients they’d be sacrificing during Lent so they don’t go bad. King Cake and other treats made with ingredients from this period help remind us of that time of year.

While Mardi Gras and Carnival are rooted in religious holidays, some believe it’s based on pagan celebrations of spring and fertility. In any case, I think it’s a time for everyone who wants to enjoy it and make it through the dismal winter season before spring brings everything back to life.
Some other US cities known for their large Mardi Gras celebrations are Mobile, Alabama, St. Louis, Missouri, and Galveston, Texas. Globally it’s known by many names like Carnevale in Italy, Carnival in Brazil, Fasching in Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. It’s also celebrated in Russia as Maslenitsa and in Slovenia as Kurentovanje. Whatever it’s called, they all represent a time of parties, parades, and delicious food before a season of sacrifice begins.
I am only just touching the surface of what Mardi Gras is. If you find this topic interesting, I encourage you to read more about it. It’s a fascinating history, with many traditions in New Orleans and many other cities and countries.

Behind the colors
of Mardi Gras
Purple, Green and Gold are traditional colors for this festive season. But do you know why these colors were chosen?
From 1892 to 1893, during the Rex Krewe’s parade “Symbolism of Colors,” purple was chosen as the color representing justice. Green was chosen for faith, and gold for power.
Foods Enjoyed
during Mardi Gras
The Mardi Gras season is a time for celebration, and what better to celebrate with than good food? Here are some of the best foods to eat during Mardi Gras:
For sweet tooths: King Cakes, Beignets, Bananas Foster, Pralines and Roman Candies. In cities with bigger Polish populations like Cleveland, you’ll find treats like Pączki at many local bakeries.
Savory flavors of Cajun and Creole can be enjoyed with Jambalaya, Red Beans + Rice, Gumbo, Muffuletta, Etouffee, Po’Boys, and seafood dishes.
King Cake and Pączki are the most seasonal-specific treats on this list, with the rest available year-round.

Note: King Cake is traditionally eaten only during the Carnival season, aka King Cake season. Red Beans + Rice is a Monday night meal.

Pączki Day
Tuesday, February 21, 2023
This popular Polish pastry pronounced like “Poonch Kee”, means donut in Polish and has quite a popular following in the Cleveland area. So much so, people order theirs a month in advance to make sure they get a box of them for Pączki Day. This popular occasion has ties to Mardi Gras in that it was intended to use up indulgent ingredients before the season of Lent for those who observe.
Pączki are made from a sweet, yeasty dough and are often filled with jams or creams and coated with powdered sugar. Pączki Day is celebrated on Fat Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday with some celebrating it on the Thursday before Mardi Gras.

Silly little end note for anyone who read this far. The term “Mardi Gras” is used 90 times in this post. The word “Beignet” 33, “King Cake” is used 29 times, and surprisingly “Pączki” is only used 38 times. I felt like I said that word at least 100.
Your comment on my Ptuj post brought me here.. Small world indeed! 🙂
